I have been so busy this year, I have been an asshole with not finishing posts and have a ton of drafts. It's the story of my life. I am turning it into The Best of 2012. One of the best things was going to Europe, England, and Scandinavia. Here's what I wrote after I'd returned home...
Team Excepter reconnect. Team Excepter form new alliances.Team Excepter Team Excepter does does it up. Team Excepter ties one on. Team Excepter leaves their mark. Team Excepter almost explodes. Team Excepter blows it up. I have been home for a minute now. They move so fast, these experiences. I'll keep it picturesque, and leave the print gossip to a minimum. All in all, we have met some great people, forged new alliances, recorded two new Excepter records. Here are the good moments, the awesome people, the beautiful land and rocking shows. I wish Nathan could have been there.I'd left my camera in Paris on the first day, and picked it up on the way back, in transit to the UK. So, this is where it begins.

Ah... thee old boots...
After last years romp through Germany and Czech Republic, I would not go back with sneakers only. There was no question that I would bring my along Ol' Reliables. They were my third pair of Doc's. The first pair that I had gotten were hand me downs from Tony Brummel. 13 hole Ox Bloods. I cut 'em into 5 hole Chukka Doc's- Something unheard of in those days. That was in '87-88 I was wearing some combat boots that I had gotten from a friend of my sisters- Jojo, for 16$ in '86. Shit. It totally doesn't feel like it's been that long. In the early 90's after I had started bike messengering, one of the first things I did after I started making good money was buy myself some new shoes. I purchased 2 pairs of Doc's, a pair of blue suede creepers and a pair of black work boots for the winter. I lost the creepers in my move to the East Coast. I wore the shit out of these boots over the years. They fare so well on those cobblestone ass streets that Europe has to offer.
29-2-2012
Back in the Saddle Part Two
The Big Buffalo Snow Lodge is pretty awesome. It was the first time that I had ever played the Guitar with a Loop Pedal. I must say, I am liking this, yes- yes.
3-3-2012
Who Are The Real Jocks?
Last night, S.S.P.S. played a show. It was a blast and I thank everyone who came and everyone who played. The musical fare was mostly electronic- from Drone to Dance. The venue suggested a seemingly rock and roll atmosphere with patrons to match. There was also a synth driven indy rock band, but I am talking bout the pure electronic music that was presented over the course of the evening, when the "rock" ended for a few hours. The morning after, I asked myself- Who are the real jocks? When a "pure electronic" music replaces a proto-typical "Rock and Roll" situation, the punks become the jocks.

I love a night that degenerates into chaos. I am saying this in a romantic sense. I love when a night degenerates into chaos in retrospect. In retrospect, I love how night situations unfold too my amusement. When I pulled up to the Lone Wolf, Behavior was already playing. They might have been into their second song. I was to play second and I did my thang. There were a couple of hecklers in the crowd. I shut them up in my segway to "Sweet Children." There was no more shit talking for the duration of the set. Did an encore that was a cover melody of THere's a Woman" by Gino Soccio and "Terminal to Infinity" off of the SSPS Cassette.
Obsolete Units has recently run out cassettes but there might be reprint in the works More on that later. Long Distance Poison bought the house down to close it out with a percussion-less four piece drone synth attack. Before they could even finish, they were shut off by the bar, replacing the apex of the evening with Bon Jovi or some other rock and roll bullshit. All right. Finally, some "real" music. Bullocks. I got the fuck out of there after a table got flipped over. This place is no Duffs. It's a wanna be.

20-4-2012
Shit. I have been working so much that I have had no time to blog it up with y'all. Everything that I'd written before today are irrelevant. I have different problems today. I need to make a flow chart. The Power Drone MkIII is at last complete. Well, it needs to be racked.jon Sunvillehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05038150211524501192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5518866354977691944.post-67442586098976929412012-02-28T05:20:00.000-08:002012-02-28T05:20:34.443-08:00SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY! TUESDAY AND FRIDAY: SSPS MAKES UP FOR LOST TIMEIn the last year, following the tragedy, pretty much immediately afterwards, I became a Trucker. I'd already been a box trucker for the greater fine art world in the New York City area for a greater part of ten years. With a stint of OTR truckung in 2002 before this last year. My father trucked. My brother trucks. I can truck it up as well. Little fucking gear jammer. I didn't play live too often last year. I tried to keep playing as much as I could. Hotel life is fucking lonely. Playing in headphones sucks. Dragging your rig up two floors so you can set up too play for no one sucks after driving for eleven hours. Coming home feels crazy. Anyways, I am playing two shows this week, the first of which is tonight at a new venue called "Big Snow Buffalo Lodge" on the Southside of Williamsburg. There's gonna be an Aussie in the building, TIM COSTER will be bringing his noise from down under. Austrailian noise. I like the sound of that. Local legends- DRIP HOUSE will also grace the stage. Ex-2000Million10 bandmate and multimedia queen REBECCA GAFFNEY will be on the visuals with MATTHEW CARON to insure our eyes while we provide sound for your ears. Check the Facebook invite here---
Like a blind contour drawing, the continuous line moves straight, veering, bending, and suddenly with out notice, a hairpin turn. Squiggle. Scribble. Straight line. Veer right. Arc left. One day, the graphite runs out. The fingers of life push the graphite until nothingness is achieved on the page that is this world. All resources are tapped. The physical energy stops and there is seemingly no more. The energy put forth into the fetish object, as it were, can now emit that energy into the world for ever. One year ago, a dear friend left this world and forever altered multiple lives. When you hear word of a loved one moving on, it is so devastating. It crushes your soul, and for some time, you feel emptiness that is filled by despair and anger. Those, despair and anger, are fertilized by tears of love and remembrance. Something is sprouting out of the ground. Then one day, with out notice, there is change in the air. The dismal reality grows into hope, and with this new sprouting seed, it grows into a mighty Redwood, with the strength, and fortitude, it reaches into space, closer to Heaven, where we shall meet again.

A domino was tipped over. The dominoes were in the shape of a blind contour drawing that took our lives up to tis point to complete. When the last domino fell, it hit a star that in turn collapsed into a super nova displacing the nearby planets, satellites, space dust, sending everything into new orbits. As we continue to get used to our new orbits, our new places in space, there is an invisible bond that we are all experiencing at the same moment. Like some cosmic gas that has yet to be classified on the periodic table, we have all been bathed in the explosion. You put love into the universe and it is there for ever. I want to personally thank all of the all of you hardcore Excepters out there who had a kind word to say about our dear friend. Your positive energy is put out into the world from all over the world. Live the best life you can. Cherish the good times and learn from the bad ones. We'll keep on keepin' on, ownward into the 21st century, until someone turns the lights out on this place.
LIVE MIXI (under my SSPS guise) played a show. It was the first show of 2012 and aside from forgetting the words for some new songs, and misplacing my production notes, thus not playing a couple of songs, I think the show went alright. I have never really satisfied with the SSPS shows like I am when Excepter plays. For one, I'm alone. I am my own harshest critic. There is no one else to blame. Not that there is (blame) in Excepter. They are two distinctly different agendas. If Excepter is togetherness and friendship inside of an exquisite corpse, SSPS is loneliness- a man and his machines on a vision quest trying to make sense of his surroundings. I was a bit nervous, to tell you the truth. It was a star studded affair, my rock and roll peers and friends were there, many of which I have not seen all year since i have been pushing this truck. Below is a video of the set filmed by Professor Genius.
For those of you who aren't familiar, I have been part of a monthly party at Tandem in
Brooklyn, NY for just over two years. It's called Particularly Random. In my years of record collecting and spinning records, it has been my favorite residency since the Double Door's "Redlite Dirtroom" parties in Chicago (with another cohort known today as "Svengali's Ghost"(more on him later) in 1997. In fact, It's the only other residency that I have ever held. Fellow Random Dude- James Stache archives most of them. With my being gone all of the time, I have been fortunate to have only missed three or four parties, last month. This was my first DJ appearance in two months! Set list for the entire night is up. James- your an ambitious dude listing the set list for the entire evening! We are a bunch of nerds!
"Traxx is possibly my favorite DJ in the world. And while many DJs can't successfully execute their ideals in their own productions, his music is exactly the kind of amazing stuff that he would spin. His overwhelming passion for great music comes through in his production. The pinnacle of his art, whether he is DJing or producing, is his ability to seize the moment and make crucial changes only when they are necessary. His art is not just a 'back to basics' approach, but a refinement of styles that have been abandoned for music with slick transitions and needless ornamentation. This is Jakbeat in its rawest form." After a year in hiatus, Excepter awakens from it's dormant state. This time we find ourselves on the Left Coast. Fun in the sun- night life with a hint of Dan Flavin. Sweating to the oldies, a modern day sock hop for the Children on the Damned, an LA Excepter takes stage. As, per usual for me, anyways- I was late getting into town and got no time to sound check. I drove into LA around 10:30-11PM. I had woke woke up late but was out of the room and on the road by 9AM. The day before, I had left Santa Fe way later than expected. Nathan and I went out for breakfast, and then for a hike. He is dong well and sends his regards. It was beautiful in Santa Fe. I can see why he is out there and not in some other rat cage of a city. He's a Mountain Boy anyways. I tend to think romantically about the whole notion. Living on the edge of a South Western town. I can't wait to go out there again. The land is really enchanted. It was eighteen degrees when I woke up in Holcomb on the 10th of December. I had driven from Holcomb, Az. to Phoenix- worked for 4 hours dealing with a nice sized lot of post modern furniture at Red Modern, and straight to L.A. One Shot -got to the City of Angels, unloaded, set up and played -almost no time to drink the beer that I'd cracked immediately upon arrival. I'd stopped once for Diesel and Taco Bell in Cochella. I'd worked for the full 14 hours allowed by law. Ten hours behind the wheel is brutal, no matter who you are. Multiply those fourteen hours by seventy a week, and that's a truck drivers life. I had driven 10,000 miles (16093.44 kilometers) in three weeks... and that was my fifth trip in a row since September. For the last year, my life has been the road. Making the miles. It's almost like being on tour only there is no live music every night, or cool motherfuckers to shoot the shit with. You get paid for driving a truck. Touring is shoveling money into a furnace and loving the sweet misery. It was rad to get out of the truck and see La Familia Excepter. It'd been a while since I'd seen them... with the added bonus of Erica being there for the weekend... Teddy was there tooo... boyyyeeee..... I felt like I was back in Brooklyn for a split second! Twilight Zone, indeed. That made the push more than worth it!
Ariel Pink played a surprise karaoke set. Duets with this guy who was reminding me of Damned Rat Scabies sings for "Hit and Run" Era TSOL. LA Rockers on late night AM radio. It's a life style choice. It was awesome. I wish I could have recorded it. It was ashamed that I didn't get a chance to pick his brain, a little. I love Ariel. I'd missed the first act. James Ferraro wasn't there. I'm beginning to wonder if he is a real person. I have to admit, I do love his elusive ways. From what I remember, Puro Instinct beat it nasty. they were very "LA", and when I say that, I mean "LA way" like Missing Persons-esque, but not throw back kitsch, and when I say "nasty", I mean- "Who's that eating that nasty fruit?- 'Nasty Boys' Nasty" plus Missing Persons. I was out of sorts after the drive, but that's Rock and Roll.
It has been a second since I was last able to rappitate with you all. Since July, I have been to Europe with my numero uno P.I.C.(Partner in Crime) - Jerk Party, came back to the USA, got in a truck and drove from Brooklyn, to Houston Tx.- around to Naples Fl.- across to Miami- raced Irene back to Brooklyn- went to the Midwest- around to the Northeast, Montreal and Toronto. I have been home since Saturday. So far, this is the longest I've been home since then. Lets start in Kutna Hora, Czech Republic...

After arriving in Berlin, we pretty much got on a train and went directly to Prague. We were meet by Rado. He's the man, you see. Us three, then drove out to Creepy Teepee, where I ended up blowing out the electricity for the entire stage lights, sound everything- three times. Considering it was my birthday, it was my latest version of blowing out the candles. Thanks to Drugs for Drunks (from Mexico City)and their one 110V power strip, I was able to plug about 3/4 of my equipment drag my way through a set. While I was not satisfied with the performance, the crowd thought otherwise! After lengthy discussions with the engineers, we worked it out best the best way we could, given the circumstances. It would ultimately be the "US Power strip" with a special surge protector, purchased from Radio Shack that was supposed to be safe with the 500Watt step up/down electricity converter that I'd purchased for the trip. It worked the night before in Berlin in this Woman's kitchen. More on Germany, later. Anyways, I would plug the power strip in to the converter. every thing is turned off. Nothing is plugged into anything. Plug in the turned off power strip and POOF! All of the fucking lights are out. What the fuuuuck? After 3 times of the same thing, on my Birthday no less- the other band that had happened to have an American power strip
- Drugs for Drunks (hailing from Mexico City) lent me their strip, and I was able to plug in part of my stuff and play a sound check and live set with what I had. I was glad that it turned out okay. It has become sort of crazy to travel with electronics, using public transportation. One of my original positive sides for moving into the world of electronics, was because it was so mobile- ie: I could ride my bicycle too shows with my gear in my bag. It was nothing like trying to haul around an Ampeg 8/10 and a bass to shows with guitars, drums, amp's and such. Follow an interest with an open ear and see where it takes you. May your interest become a passion. May that passion take you too new and exciting places in your mind. Feel those sensations associated with transcendence and goodness.
The next day we went sightseeing. Kutna Hora is quite old. The mid evil city planners must have been completely crazy. We got so lost.
After being lost for about two and a half hours, accidentally ending up at the hotel, we hooked up with those two zany children- Shannon and Bruno (from that Brooklyn outfit- Light Asylum) we decided on taking a cab to the "Bone Church." There was this interactive sculpture that was being installed in the center of town over the course of the morning. I jokingly told Erica that it was the Gallows.
After accidentally walking back to our Hotel, trying to find this "Bone Church" after an hour and a half, we were very frustrated. Europe's cobblestone sidewalks are no joke. Us American's are spoiled by the little things, like the cement sidewalks. Holy shit did the travel rig get shaken to almighty shit. I could have honestly made a commercial for Gator Cases. Anyways, we get back too our hotel and a van pulls up with R.Stevie Moore and Light Asylum. After meeting with these folks and some nap time, we took a cab to the fabled "Bone Church."
Of course, I'll keep you updated on the progression as it draws closer. As it stands, the first show is going too be on the 28 July, 2011 in KUNTA HORA, CZECH PERUBLIC at the 3rd edition of the CREEPY TEEPEE Independent Music Festival, curated by A.M.180 Crew.
The festival is taking place at the Galerie Středočeského kraje - GASK / Czech Museum of Fine Arts. The festivities are taking place From the 28TH through the 31ST of July, 2011. SSPS Plays on the first night, which also happens too be my birthday. I hope that I am going to be able too bring my guitar. It will only fit in one of those "Coffins" which are huge, and I was planning on packing the electronics in it. The Six Stringed Guitar, being a new element in SSPS might be expendable. I am going to try and bring it though. It is so fun too play, this Guitar. After all of these years playing bass, why did I wait so long? When the time is right, it happens. It just happens. The instruments choose you. I am planning on traveling with as little as possible. I have been readjusting my live rig for international travel. I'm going to mash it up, seen?
Because of expenses associated with this trip, I must postpone the limited edition 100 records. I will be going ahead with the CDR's though. I have too get cracking on the art work. I'll be travelling with cassettes and CDR's from both- EXCEPTER and SSPS. I am sorry, but I am out of the split LED ER EST/SSPS split 7 inchs. I got a couple of trips going down at work, so it is going too be a busy month! Damn, a truckers life is hard. I'll be in Chicago for a jaunt but, it's gonna be extremely busy. In and out. Then I am off too Florida. When I return there will be a special "LEO" edition of Particularly Random. SSPS No.2 COMING SOONjon Sunvillehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05038150211524501192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5518866354977691944.post-37438913222410258612011-04-18T05:12:00.000-07:002011-06-16T11:01:32.331-07:00OTR Again...Hello, all. It's been some time since I last shared with you. The fact is, I have become a truck driver again and the workload has me running crazy. I'm trucking around Fine Art and Antiques. It is a hell of a task. I am by myself, for one. Dealing with such high value objects without those other two hands of your helper is a difficult task. Everything takes longer. It is nice to get paid for what you do though and if I must push this little rig alone, that I am hauling objects that I am interested in, and not microwaves, or some other cargo that I could give two shits about. It's a lonely existence when you are on the road alone. You check into your hotel- alone. You are often in the middle of nowhere- alone. You're in touch with the office, but they are for the most part, a million miles away, and are not experiencing the traffic, construction,etc... I can only wonder how these things are taken into account when it gets crazy... Weigh Stations. The size of the trucks. The size of the Art Object that is not taken into account when it is purchased at the gallery, where there is room to maneuver large objects properly, versus your home- where the object will not fit through any door or window when it gets to your house. The truck routes of cities that are foreign to you. The shitty food choices. The log books. The weather. The loneliness. There is an upside. I do like the travelling. It's a lot like being on tour, only you get paid. In all of my touring, I am often broke, and losing money. It is nice to get that check and provide for your self and your family, if you have one. When you get to a city where you know some people, it's nice to look them up, after work is done. It was nice to see the Bike Club in Minneapolis.
It was even better to see a long lost brother from the Hard Core days!
I like going into the strange bars, where I am the odd man out, trying to initiate conversations with people who don't trust you. I don't even need to try to mess with people. I just am. In a lot of these redneck bars I walk into, I defy the stereotype of both truck drivers, and black people. I defy black stereotypes to the few black people that I encounter in these places. Drugs seem so much nastier in the country than in the city. The absence of any kind of middle class is a mind fuck for any Carpetbagger that comes to the South. There is only rich and poor, black and white, in the country, when you are in a bar. This is my experience, and mine alone. I have the SSPS Power Drone with me and have been recording my musical experiences from various locations in this great land of ours.
I reposted from one of the blogs that I read, this morning, before going to a job interview. Once more, I don't know what to say. We grew up with Lulu. She did so much for so many. Patron Saint to not only the Children, all people. I know you are up in heaven. Loleatta , Clair Amory, Kurt "Supermax" Hauenstein, Mick Karn, Bo Didley, Munetaka Higuchi, and Chrislo Haas have started a Super Group. Ron Hardy is producing it. God will be holding a press conference where he anounces the new groups name and tour dates inside your dreams. Here's a diddy from a sweet little 45...

... and my personal favorite. Who remembers the edit of Dreamin' that Craig Alexander and Rush used to bump, where it was flipped upside down, and every which way but loose? Will Loleatta's secret House edits see the light of day again? I am not talking about some new shit, but I am open to listen if you can bring it without being tacky or stupid. We can tell in the first 48 bars if it's weak or not...
As posted from "Digital Spy"

Loleatta Holloway has died at the age of 64.

According to SpinningSoul, manager Ron Richardson confirmed that the singer passed away yesterday after a brief illness.

Richardson linked to the story from his official Twitter page, adding, "RIP Loleatta Holloway". He had previously posted messages about her health and had thanked fans for their support.

Holloway started as a gospel singer before moving into soul and then disco. She was best known for hits including 'Hit and Run', Salsoul Orchestra's 'Runaway' and 'Love Sensation', which was later heavily sampled by Black Box for the first mix of their 1989 hit 'Ride On Time'.

The track was also used by Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch for their 1991 single 'Good Vibrations', which credited Holloway as a featured artist.

She also performed on Dan Hartman's original version of 'Relight My Fire', which was later covered by Take That with Lulu. Holloway appeared with the band to sing her part on their 'Circus' tour and features on the live document The Greatest Day.

A number of musicians have paid tribute to Hollway on Twitter since news of her death broke.

Boy George wrote: "God rest your soul Loleatta Holloway, you were the greatest voice and I loved you! R.I.P."

DJ Gilles Peterson added: "Loleatta Holloway RIP ... a total soul and disco legend." Fellow DJ Kissy Sell Out commented: "R.I.P. Loleatta Holloway - a rare talent who held such extraordinary importance to the history & influence of house music xxxxxxx"

What a great loss for all music lovers.
Most people who know me know, I am a huge fan of Lil Louis and his records never leave my crate. He really used to beat it. This man was legendary, even back then, in Chicago. Diamond Corporation was the ultimate and they threw the largest parties in the city. As this tape progresses, it come to a head on side two where he really begins to beat the mix. It is purely House.
In the last 11 Years, as dance music really started picking picking up on the East Side of the East River, dance music was starting to emanate from Manhattans dirtier, rowdier sibling - Brooklyn, a new breed of DJ's and musicians were dumpster diving their way to the top of the game. Once, words like House, Techno, or the"thought of that kind of dance music" would make people cringe. It was only then that the proverbial pinkie finger called "Italo Disco" was starting to be inserted back into Rock and Roll's butt, late at night, after a long hiatus. Anyways, I knew I'd met a special dude when we met. I love how these magical things work, that Eight solid years later, we would share such a night such as PARTICULARLY RANDOM AT TANDEM. Where we go out of our way to give you pleasure. He made a NEW MIX to titalate your dance desires. You should hop up on this one when your putting on your spring time night duds!Tonight at RANDOM TANDEM, we have our friend COUSIN COLE in the building!!! Oh my goodness- I am listening to this nice little track of his right now... There's a gang of stuff up on his soundcloud for the House and Disco heads. We have all types up in here, hunty. I am going to also be playing some new SSPS Deaddits and tracks made just for us, tonight. I was digging around in my CD's and found one in the RED LIGHT DISCO MIX ARCHIVES from 2004. There's some heaters on it. SEE YA ON THE DANCE FLOOR!jon Sunvillehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05038150211524501192noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5518866354977691944.post-84192454497386476102011-03-10T17:06:00.000-08:002011-03-10T17:06:54.705-08:00Build Your Own Soundcloud. I did.So, what's going on with your "internet modern musicing", these days? Are you half way sick of "your space" yet? We don't need to talk about that bullshit because I know we all are. I've been on this "Soundcloud" kick and the more I am finding out about this contraption, the more I enjoy it. It's much easier to navigate than "your space"- pages don't take ten years to load because there is no bullshit ass content to load. I'd been sitting on this one for a second. I am even starting too see some old friends popping around. It will be interesting to see how Soundcloud develops. As an all around music/art dude, this is the joint. I put out an EP out while I was uploading some sounds from the cassette tape archives...
