Deep Disco Drums

Here at the blog, we love us some deep disco drums. In fact, my first affair with any instrument was the snare drum in the Palisades Chieftans grade school band. Two years later, I'd get my first Bass Guitar from my skateboard buddy, Rob Hogan and yadda, yadda, yadda. I've spoken about my journey into music, many times. It doesn't get old for me, however, I hate typing it out. Anyways. I love percussive music. I am thinking about what records to pull from the collection when I ring in 2010 at Rubulad in Brooklyn. Here is a taste of some of what I might be bringing with me to the party. It is going to be wild. I will do my best to document it and post it on the internet for your listening pleasure. Cha Cha Ciao!!!

Charlie Calello Orchestra - Sing Sing Sing
The first time I ever heard this song was from DJ Rush. From the second those toms started pounding, the whole party shifted into high gear. It was the first time I'd ever see serious dancing on the verge of anarchy, that wasn't related to punk. It might even be the first time that I'd danced with a room packed full of people, guys and girls, shoulder to shoulder, dancing, laughing and screaming, all together. Before this, for me, dancing was restricted to the pit, slow jams at school dances, or on pieces of cardboard, breakdancing with the boys...

Boney M - Night Flight to Venus
My mother had "Take The Heat Off Me" in her collection, so when I spied this record, I had to get it. One would buy it (or any Boney M record) for the cover alone.

Idrus Muhammad - Could Heaven Ever Be Like This
This one is a Redlite classic. Redlite is the group effort between SSPS and BELOW UNDERGROUND. 2010 will see the REDLITE 12". More on that later.

Nicky Siano - Tiger Stripes
This one reminds me of Juan Chavez. It was awesome when records like this were the records in the dollar bins at the record stores that no one cared about hearing.

T Connection - Do What You Wanna Do
This record makes me want to beg Gene Ferris to play a disco set, again.

Undisputed Truth -Big John Is My Name
... and you all know who I am...

Marsha Hunt - On the Other Side of Midnight
... and that's where we'll see each other...

2010 is Go!!!!

The Long Haul

It's 10am. Monday. I am on the crust of Chicago in a motel (formally known as 'Howard Johnsons') next to the "Mirage", a rental banquet hall, where my high school prom was. I'm here as help for two dear friends who are moving to Chicago after a 10-12 year hiatus. I have to say, it was the longest drive, ever, maybe. I missed a sweet dj gig and two days of work, to get to Chicago, to find that the apartment that my friends drove here from, leaving their Brooklyn garden apartment, is not finished yet. I feel bad for the cats involved. Wassabi is freaked the fuck out. Rocky is not as bad. don't know how we are going to re-trap them, or where they are even gonna be taken. I feel bad for these folks. I will only be in town for a day and want to spend it doing something fun. That might not happen. I will freak out if I have to stay in Schiller Park, again, tonight. I am getting the fuck on facebook and weighing my rooming options. The even shitter part of the equation is, being so close to Ohare, I have to leave from fucking Midway (on the other side of the city)and I have a layover in Atlanta, and what should be a two and a half hour flight, is gonna be like eight hour affair. Pissed. Plus, it snowed, whhile we slept. Who knows what is gonna do for the airports, here. There was a caper involved, that might have made everything worth while, that fell through (maybe for the best). I question why I go out of my way to help my friends, but when I see the bit of relief in their faces, that I could be of help to them, when they are in a pickle, is worth it, I guess... I still wanna have some fun tonight! I need a fucking pizza puff, a joint, and an Old Styleeeee!!!!

Flea Market Mania!!!

Who doesn't love shopping for records at the flea market? Got 20 records for 15 bucks. Some of your usual "pop fare"- My favorite finds are a Banana Splits 45, and Napoleon XIV!!! Gotta have a 45 party soon, most Definitely!!! These are the only records that I could find clips for. Prince doesn't have any music - anything on the internet!!! The other 45's are too obscure, even for the internet... except, maybe the Joey Dee and the Starlighters, who doesn't have one for "Hot Pastrami and Mashed Potatoes". I also got an awesome port painting for six bucks, and a club grade "disco beam" for 10$. There was a "snow/foam" maker, that looked a lot like a fog machine that I had to pass up. I wished I had a camera with me. T'was a beautiful day for a flea market at a Drive In movie theater on top of a mountain.

DUANE EDDY - PEPE

NAPOLEON XIV - THEY'RE COMING TO TAKE ME AWAY HA-HAAA!

BANANA SPLITS - DOIN' THE BANANA SPLIT

BRUCKNER AND GARCIA - DO THE DONKEY KONG

GARY GLITTER - ROCK AND ROLL (PARTS 1 +2)

SILVER CONVENTION - TELEGRAM

YAZOO - ODE TO BOY

BERLIN - THE METRO

WALL OF VOODOO - CALL OF THE WEST

BRONSKI BEAT WITH MARC ALMOND - I FEEL LOVE

BANANARAMA - AIE A MWANA

CURTIS MAYFIELD - UNDERGROUND

THE TRAMMPS - DISCO INFERNO

GRAND MASTER MELLE MEL AND THE FURIOUS FIVE - BEAT STREET BREAKDOWN

MUSICAL YOUTH - PASS THE DUTCHIE

I think that the Virus is having an effect on me...

I am seriously contemplating selling off some private stock from the record collection to acquire a Access Virus C. The size intrigues me, in my search to down size my rig, while maximizing on sound power. I like the end of this video, especially. Like minds? I would say, yes. Up with graffiti rock.

RELAX IN PARADISE - SUSAN FIOL May 9, 1960 – October 5, 2009

It makes me so sad when, someone I know, dies. When you add cancer to the mix, it is almost unbearable. Your heart just crumbles. I am gonna miss your raspy voice. Thank you for believing in Excepter. We are forever grateful. I can speak for the band on that matter.

Repost from the Issue Project Room Site...
IN MEMORIAM WITH LOVE

Suzanne Fiol, May 9, 1960 – October 5, 2009

Dear friends,

It is with great heartbreak and sorrow that ISSUE Project Room announces the passing of our founder, artistic director, and driving force, Suzanne Fiol. Born on May 9, 1960, Suzanne died at 1:05 pm on Monday, October 5, 2009, after fighting a courageous and inspiring battle against cancer. Suzanne passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Our hearts go out to her daughter Sarah, her sister Nancy, and her parents Lawrence and Arlene Perlstein and her partner Anthony Coleman.

Anyone who has met Suzanne knows that she devoted her life to creating and sustaining a space where artists — acclaimed and emerging, local and international — could develop and perform new, challenging, and exciting works. Regardless of the different venues we’ve inhabited since our inception in 2003, ISSUE has always been Suzanne’s labor of love, a space that housed and reflected her restless intellect, fiery spirit, and great heart. She would often jokingly refer to herself as “Mama Issue,” a fitting moniker considering the unconditional love she unabashedly showed her friends, family, artists and the steadily growing audiences that have been coming to ISSUE over the years.

We are grief-stricken by Suzanne’s passing, yet inspired by her vision and strength, and will devote ourselves to fulfilling her vision with the strength we draw from our memories of her. Programming will continue this week in honor of Suzanne, and we welcome you all to come to ISSUE and share your memories.

DETROIT: I LOVE YOU!!!

This city is just my speed! It's got that "Daytime Desolation", much like Pittsburgh, Pa. The people were so K.A (kick ass)!!! It was most definitely the most diverse crowd that Excepter has played for. It was just about equal, black and white! I have not seen that many black people @ an electronic music happening since DJ Rush's parties in the early 90's. Nathan and I had a slave/master relationship with our midi clocks for the first time, and it was a symbiotic relationship that we have gotta get JF in on. The 707 (me), 808 (JF), and 909 (N8), sound so good together. We're on some Destiny's Child shit, as far as the machine scene is concerned. Analog Sex Symbols = Excepter Midwest tour 2009!!! I finally met DJ Deadbeat, who I have been in correspondence with for the greater part of a year. Tonight is gonna be a hoot in Chicago. Pizza Puffs, all day. There is a Cat Circus, before our show! I can't wait. I get to drive the stick shift station wagon today. I'll try not to rip out the trannie! JK! I seriously can't wait to whip my slave!!!!
From Detroit,
Jon

EXCEPTER RUST BELT TOUR Part ONE!!!

How goes it, y'all? Hanging tough in Ohio, Super 8 stylee! It's 8:45AM. Got up early for some free breakfast fever. Oberlin, Ohio was great. The Art Museum has an art rental program. It's pretty sick! Have you ever pee'd with an originial Salvadore Dali piece propped up against a toilet water tank? The show was great, in my opinion. The "Woods" (with my buddy - Lucas Crane), also from Brooklyn shared the stage with us last night. It was the last show of a six week tour for them! For us, it was the first of four... a long weekend, for us. THey got rid of the turntables @ the Scoand I got a rare chance at aa little digthrougth the crates! 43 Records have been added to the collection! The crown jewels were a rare Claudio Simmonette 12" and a Factory Record by 52nd Street that Ron Hardy used to beat out, and has been high on my want list for years! Got some Wax Trax stuff (Luk Van Acker, Pailhead, Revolting Cocks)... some campy stuff, some italo stuff... watch out because my "Want a New Drug" double record juggle game is gonna get real tight when I return! I can see where Dan Selzer, Morgan Giest, Ryan Chowdery,etc... got some of that heat from! Kudo's to you Oberlin! You are molding some of the greatest minds in the land and I am thankfull to help the kids, "let off some steam" via musical teleportation! I've been going picture crazy. I'll get em on up when we get back. I bought a domain name, right before I left. ---www.pyramidsnake.com--- I'll get that up and running, soon too. Tonight, might be the last night that any one is going to be able to get the SSPS/LED ER EST split 7inch:-@ There are 15 left. The Black Beach is here and so is the La Sala Rosa CD! I get so excited when new Excepter shit comes out! Gonna Do Detroit up right, tonight!!!
From the road---
Cha Cha Ciao,
Jon

TURAGA!!!!

Who likes some African music?

BBQ MOVIE

Remember Night Flight?

Remember when you discovered "underground" music?

... and Husker Du was god? The first Husker Du record I heard was "Land Speed Record". I was 12 year old, and, Sunny Masek's sister (Tricia?), lent me 2 records, "Land Speed Record" and Butthole Surfers- "Brown Reason to live". Do the Bee was my favorite song. It took me some time to realize that that they didn't make a record player that played at 69RPM with the Butthole Surfers record, so, I listened to it at both 33.3 and 45RPM. It was equally nightmarish. The punk wave was sweeping through the waste lands of the city and the suburbs in 1984-5. All ages shows allowed the under age to congregate with one another, developing friends in different areas, before having even a drivers license. It was an "older kids" place, and they let you know it, until, they'd seen you around for a year or two, then it was about respect. Following bands was a lot of fun, before the internet- Correspondence, fanzines and hand bills. All this time later, I am thankful to play in a band that does shit, and turn people on, like I was turned on. Punk, or, hardcore punk music seemed small, intimate, even in my 12 year old mind. There were few kids that you could even talk to about this type of music with in 1985. Hell, we were still break dancing, but that was the flip side of youth culture. What was music for nerds in 1985 became music for football teams in 1992, at least in my experience. I had a deep resentment for the grunge scene, in high school. I blamed them for exposing what was small and intimate to the greater world of ass holes. I'd come to learn that this theory is garbage and it's all about the circle of life. Circle Pit.

Making Ends Meet

I am extremely pissed, to say the least. At least I aquired an awesome bike.schwinn collegiate Pictures, Images and Photos Can you believe someone threw this bike away. It cost me 22 dollars in parts and about an hours time to get rolling. Mine is the 3 speed version. I salvaged a Schwinn seat from a dying bike on Knickerbocker Ave. It's the flip side of seeing stripped bike locked up and abandoned. You know what they say about one man's garbage...
